For over ten years, Kristen has practiced in the area of family law and has experience in all aspects of family law, including: divorce, maintenance and alimony, temporary and permanent support, child custody, legitimation, paternity, post-divorce custody and support modifications and marital property division, domestic violence and protection orders, and name changes. She practiced with several law firms prior to starting her own practice, The Files Law Firm, where she continues to maintain an active practice advising clients in all aspects of family disputes. She also currently works as a Legal Writing Instructor at her alma mater, John Marshall Law School.
Before beginning her law practice, Kristen worked as an Equal Opportunity Specialist with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, where her work included investigating housing discrimination and civil rights violations in connection with Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Section 109 of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination Act, and other relevant Executive Orders and regulations and reviewing and analyzing fair housing policies and practices for federal fund recipients to secure compliance under Title VI, Section 109, Section 504, and Executive Order 11063. She also negotiated and drafted conciliation and voluntary compliance agreements between federally funded agencies and HUD and trained and monitored federally funded agencies, real estate agencies, and various other entities on federal regulations by teaching seminars, webinars, and classes.
Kristen is a graduate of Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School. While in law school, she served as an intern for The Honorable Kimberly Esmond Adams in the Fulton County Superior Court. She received her undergraduate degree in Sociology and Dance from Emory University, where she was a member of the Dean’s List and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
